In early April 2023, European energy markets witnessed a significant increase in solar photovoltaic energy production, particularly in Germany, Italy, and France. The German market led the surge with a remarkable 32% rise, marking its second consecutive week of growth. Italy followed closely with a 22% increase, while France recorded an 18% gain. However, the Iberian Peninsula faced contrasting trends, as Spain and Portugal saw declines of 6.1% and 12%, respectively.
Several key markets achieved notable production milestones during this period. On April 7, Italy reached its second-highest daily output for April, generating 146 GWh. Following this, Germany set an all-time high for April on April 8 with 426 GWh, and France followed suit on April 9 with a record of 136 GWh. Additionally, Spain and Portugal reported their second-highest production levels for April on April 10, producing 200 GWh and 22 GWh, respectively.
Looking ahead to the week of April 13, forecasts from AleaSoft Energy Forecasting predict an uptick in photovoltaic production in both Italy and Spain. In contrast, Germany is expected to experience a decline in solar output during the same period.
<pMeanwhile, the wind energy sector displayed varied trends during the second week of April. Portugal rebounded sharply with a substantial 79% increase after two weeks of declining output. Conversely, Spain, Germany, France, and Italy continued to experience downward trends for the second consecutive week. Spain recorded the smallest decrease at 20%, while Italy faced the most significant drop at 60%. Notable reductions were also reported in Germany and France at rates of 27% and 38%, respectively.
As forecasts for the third week of April emerge, expectations indicate a potential recovery in wind energy production specifically for Italy. However, other analyzed markets are anticipated to continue facing further declines in wind energy output.
