Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Republic of Srpska is evaluating additional energy investments in the Bileća area, including the potential construction of a new hydropower plant, Energy and Mining Minister Petar Đokić said during a visit to the municipality. He stressed that the region remains strategically important for developing the entity’s energy infrastructure.
Local energy spending and planned follow-on investments
Đokić said about €70 million has been invested in local energy projects over the past decade. He added that further investments are currently being planned. The minister did not provide additional breakdowns of those planned projects during the visit.
Dabar hydropower project timeline
The minister said the Dabar hydropower plant is among the most significant ongoing projects in the region. It is expected to enter operation next year, subject to construction proceeding according to schedule. No further milestones or revised dates were cited.
Solar projects announced for Bileća region
Đokić also announced plans for several large-scale solar energy projects in the Bileća area. He did not provide specific details on capacity or timelines for the solar developments. The minister said these initiatives are expected to fit alongside the region’s existing hydro-dominated power mix.
Gacko thermal plant replacement and additional unit discussions
On broader sector developments, Đokić highlighted that the Gacko thermal power plant, which has been operating for more than 40 years, will eventually require replacement. He said new generation options are under consideration, while plans for an additional thermal unit remain part of ongoing discussions. No specific project parameters were provided.
Total energy investment over 11 years
Đokić added that total investment in the Republic of Srpska’s energy sector has reached approximately €1.4 billion over the past 11 years. He presented this figure as reflecting long-term infrastructure development in the region.
