Recent rainfall has markedly improved hydrological conditions at Bileca Lake in Bosnia and Herzegovina, significantly elevating water levels and enhancing the outlook for hydropower generation in 2026. The reservoir now exceeds planned benchmarks by four meters, creating a favorable environment for increased electricity production this year.
Officials from “Hidroelektrane na Trebisnjici” (HET) report that the year has begun positively from a hydrological standpoint. Enhanced inflows have replenished a substantial part of the reservoir’s capacity, with further precipitation expected in the spring months. As a result, production targets for the first quarter are anticipated to be met without issue.
The recent cycle of precipitation has had a profound effect, raising Bileca Lake’s water level by approximately 18 meters, reaching an elevation of 385 meters above sea level. This level comfortably surpasses operational plans and provides a robust buffer for upcoming periods.
Currently, inflows into the Bileca reservoir are measured at around 90 cubic meters per second, while the Trebinje accumulation is receiving about 15 cubic meters per second. Officials indicate that Bileca Lake retains adequate storage capacity to accommodate additional inflows expected in the near future.
For 2026, HET has established an ambitious electricity generation target of 1,080 GWh. The favorable water balance observed at the beginning of this year reinforces confidence that this goal is within reach.
Last year presented considerable challenges due to an extended drought and adverse hydrological conditions; however, HET successfully met its revised production plan. This adjusted target was reduced by 30% compared to the original national energy balance, highlighting both the difficulties faced last year and the current positive shift in water levels that supports future production capabilities.
