OMV Petrom and Romgaz have completed installation of the Neptun Alpha offshore platform, advancing the Neptun Deep Black Sea gas project toward commercial production scheduled for 2027. The platform has been placed in water approximately 120 metres deep. It is set to function as the central processing hub for gas from the Domino and Pelican South fields. Processed gas will be transported via an offshore pipeline to the Romanian transmission network.
Platform specifications and construction logistics
The Neptun Alpha structure rises more than 225 metres from the seabed and has an estimated weight of around 16,500 tonnes. Saipem built the platform, with the jacket fabricated in Italy and the topsides assembled in Indonesia. Installation was carried out using the Saipem 7000 heavy-lift vessel.
Well progress and export pipeline works
Six of the project’s planned 10 production wells have already been completed. A 160-kilometre offshore export pipeline linking the development to the terminal at Tuzla has also been installed. Construction of an onshore metering station and control infrastructure is ongoing.
The remaining scope includes drilling four wells and installing three subsea production systems. Work also covers completion of gathering pipelines and umbilicals, integration of offshore and onshore facilities, and commissioning tests.
Remote operations and integration phase
The platform is designed for largely unmanned operation, with normal control handled remotely. A dedicated support vessel with accommodation for up to 90 people is being built to support maintenance and intervention campaigns. While completion of the platform and export pipeline reduces construction risk, the project still requires a complex integration phase.
Offshore gas developments can face schedule pressure during subsea installation, well completion and commissioning, particularly when equipment from multiple countries must operate as a single system.
Role in Romania’s regional gas supply
Neptun Deep underpins Romania’s ambition to become a major regional gas supplier. Production from Domino and Pelican South is expected to strengthen domestic supply, reduce imports, and potentially add volumes for neighbouring central and south-eastern European markets.
The project’s commercial relevance has increased alongside higher European gas prices and the EU’s continued reduction in exposure to Russian supply. The value of Neptun Deep will depend on reservoir output as well as Romanian transmission capacity and cross-border routes able to move Black Sea gas toward regional consumers.
