North Macedonia has taken a significant step in modernizing its electricity infrastructure with the commissioning of a new high-voltage substation in Skopje. This facility is expected to enhance the overall stability of the electricity network, particularly as the capital experiences rapid urban growth that is increasingly straining existing energy resources.
The newly operational substation aims to improve supply reliability and resilience, while also creating additional capacity for industrial and commercial development. It features a compact design that occupies a footprint approximately ten times smaller than traditional substations, with a total capacity of 120 MW. The facility utilizes a state-of-the-art 110 kV gas-insulated switchgear system, representing one of the latest advancements in power sector technology.
Incorporating cutting-edge digital and safety systems, the substation includes remote control capabilities, cable monitoring, fire protection equipment, and modern protection and control devices. Notably, it is the first project in North Macedonia to implement 110 kV cable connections specifically for powering such a facility, marking a milestone in the country’s energy sector.
The project saw participation from over 30 companies, including prominent international and regional suppliers like GE, Siemens, Končar, Astor, and Dalekovod Zagreb. This collaboration underscores the importance of both local and international expertise in advancing North Macedonia’s energy infrastructure.
Developed by EVN Macedonia, the commissioning of the TS Centralna substation aligns with the company’s commitment to enhancing the electricity network and ensuring a secure energy supply for consumers. Coinciding with EVN Macedonia’s 20th anniversary in the North Macedonian energy market, this project represents a significant outcome of their long-term investment strategy, which has seen over 800 million euros directed toward national energy infrastructure improvements.
