Hidroelectrica Achieves Record Investment in 2025 Amid Hydrological Challenges

In 2025, Romanian electricity producer Hidroelectrica reported a remarkable investment performance, channeling approximately 156 million euros into modernization and new generation initiatives. This investment represents a significant 32% increase from the previous year, underscoring the company’s commitment to enhancing its operational capabilities despite facing one of the most challenging hydrological conditions in recent history.

The substantial capital expenditure was aimed at accelerating infrastructure upgrades and expanding production capacity, aligning with Hidroelectrica’s strategic goal of reinforcing its status as Romania’s foremost renewable energy provider. However, this ambitious investment trajectory coincided with a notably adverse operational landscape. Throughout the majority of 2025, particularly in the first three quarters, weak hydrological conditions severely constrained electricity generation capabilities, leading to a 14% year-on-year decline in hydroelectric output. Consequently, 2025 has been marked as the weakest year for hydroelectric production in Romania.

Despite these challenges, Hidroelectrica managed to sustain robust financial performance. The company reported revenues totaling 1.92 billion euros, reflecting a 5% increase compared to 2024. Additionally, consolidated net profit reached 675 million euros, affirming Hidroelectrica’s position among Romania’s most profitable enterprises even amidst a difficult market environment.

The management team attributed the improved results later in the year to effective water management practices, strategic timing in electricity sales, and optimization of their commercial portfolio. They emphasized that 2025 was pivotal for advancing long-term commitments towards modernization and capacity enhancement.

Furthermore, Hidroelectrica expanded its footprint in the retail electricity market, increasing its supply portfolio to encompass 1.16 million consumption points, nearly doubling its reach from the prior year. This expansion not only solidifies its role as a leading generator but also establishes it as a significant player in the electricity supply sector.

The company operates a total of 188 hydropower plants, boasting a combined installed capacity of 6.4 GW, alongside the 108 MW Crucea wind farm. As Romania’s largest producer of renewable electricity, Hidroelectrica also holds the distinction of having the country’s largest customer portfolio for electricity.
