The Croatian engineering firm Končar has successfully commissioned the Otočac small hydropower plant, contributing 1.5 MW of renewable energy capacity to the national grid. This development aligns with Croatia’s ongoing efforts to enhance its renewable energy portfolio and promote sustainable energy solutions across the region.

The Otočac facility is equipped with three generating units, each with a capacity of 500 kW, collectively expected to generate over 7 GWh of electricity annually. This output will not only bolster local renewable energy production but also facilitate the growth of small-scale hydropower initiatives within Croatia. The project has navigated through all essential phases, including construction, testing, and final commissioning, enabling it to commence operations effectively.

A key aspect of the Otočac plant is its use of prefabricated generating units, which streamline installation processes and minimize maintenance demands throughout the plant’s operational lifespan. Končar has prioritized sustainability in the design phase, ensuring that the equipment can be recycled once it reaches the end of its operational life.

The plant’s electrical infrastructure is housed in a dedicated control building adjacent to the powerhouse. This infrastructure includes medium-voltage switchgear, transformers, frequency converters, low-voltage systems, direct current distribution, along with advanced control and automation technologies that enhance operational efficiency.

This project underscores Končar’s commitment to advancing the hydropower sector in the region. The company continues to play a significant role in supplying and integrating equipment for smaller renewable energy projects, reinforcing its position as a key player in Croatia’s transition towards a more sustainable energy landscape.
