North Macedonia has recommenced efforts on its long-stalled electricity interconnection project with Albania, as the transmission system operator MEPSO has confirmed the restart of the 400 kV transmission line initiative. This development marks a significant milestone in enhancing energy cooperation between the two nations.
The interconnection aims to directly link the electricity transmission networks of North Macedonia and Albania, a strategic move anticipated to bolster energy supply security and facilitate improved electricity trading across the Balkan region. The project is expected to play a crucial role in addressing regional energy challenges and fostering collaboration among neighboring countries.
On the North Macedonian side, the project encompasses the construction of a 97.5-kilometer transmission line, alongside a new transformer substation located near Ohrid and an additional transmission bay in Bitola. Authorities have outlined a completion timeline of 30 months, underscoring their commitment to accelerating integration with adjacent energy systems.
Financial backing for this initiative has been secured from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), which has provided a €37 million loan and facilitated an additional €12 million grant through the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF). However, the total investment figure for the project remains undisclosed at this time.
The project initially commenced construction in early 2022 but faced setbacks that led to its suspension. In late 2024, MEPSO terminated its contract with Energo-invest due to issues related to non-performance and additional payment demands. Subsequently, a new tender for contractors was announced in April 2025 to ensure progress on the project.
Concurrently, Albania began constructing its segment of the interconnection towards the end of 2023. The resumption of work on the North Macedonian side is seen as a pivotal step toward finalizing this cross-border connection, which is expected to enhance regional grid stability and promote deeper market integration within Southeast Europe.
