Finnish renewable energy investor Korkia has obtained transmission network connection approvals in Romania for a new solar and battery storage portfolio in the southwest of the country. The approvals mark a further step toward development readiness for the projects. The portfolio is located in Caras-Severin County.
The project cluster is named Iron Gates. It comprises 273 MW of solar generation capacity together with 250 MW of battery energy storage. Korkia said the permits support construction readiness, with commissioning targeted for 2027.
Grid connection reforms and timing of approvals
The connection approvals were secured as Romania prepares reforms to its electricity network connection framework. The planned changes are expected to introduce stricter requirements for developers. They also aim to replace the current allocation model with competitive auctions for available grid capacity.
Korkia secured the permits before the reforms take effect, positioning its projects within Romania’s national development pipeline. The company’s earlier progress in the country includes technical grid connection permits obtained earlier this year for another renewable energy package. That package includes 320 MW of solar capacity and 303 MW of battery storage.
Renewables investment and regional project pipeline
Romania is increasing investment in renewable energy as deployment of solar power and energy storage infrastructure accelerates. Large-scale battery systems are expected to support grid stability and improve flexibility while enabling additional renewable generation integration. Battery storage is therefore part of the country’s broader build-out described in the approvals update.
Beyond Romania, Korkia manages utility-scale projects across eight countries covering solar, wind, and battery storage technologies. Its development pipeline includes approximately 15 GW of advanced-stage projects and an additional 9 GW of early-stage assets across Europe and the Americas. The latest approvals add to Korkia’s portfolio expansion in the region.
Korkia said the new connection milestones reinforce Romania as a market for renewable investment while aligning with efforts to modernize the electricity system. The company’s portfolio update also reflects ongoing work to accelerate the transition toward cleaner power generation in the country.
