In May 2026, the Hungarian energy exchange HUPX reported higher electricity prices on its day-ahead market. The average price reached 106.51 euros/MWh. Compared with April, when the average baseload price was 96.55 euros/MWh, this equates to a 10.3% increase.
For the peak load segment of the HUPX day-ahead market, the average price was 62.16 euros/MWh. The month-on-month change on this segment was 2.9%. This points to a smaller movement in peak-hour pricing relative to the overall average.
Day-ahead trading volumes and year-on-year comparison
Day-ahead trading activity declined versus the previous month. Total traded volume in May 2026 amounted to 2.59 million MWh. That level was 6.3% lower than April, when volumes were 2.44 million MWh.
On a yearly basis, activity remained higher than in the same month of the prior year. May 2025 recorded volume of 2.49 million MWh. The May 2026 figure therefore represented an increase of around 4% compared with May 2025.
Intraday continuous market activity
The intraday continuous market also saw reduced trading activity in May 2026. Total traded volume fell to 1,027,927 MWh. This was a 5.5% decrease compared with April 2026.
The figures indicate lower short-term trading activity across the Hungarian power market during the month. Trading volumes on the intraday continuous segment moved down relative to April levels. No additional intraday product breakdowns were provided.
Market participation on HUPX segments
Market participation continued to rise across both HUPX segments mentioned in the data. The day-ahead market counted 124 registered participants, which is four more than in the previous month. The intraday continuous market recorded 118 members.
