Electricity prices on the Hungarian power exchange, HUPX, experienced a notable decline in April 2026, reflecting changing market dynamics characterized by reduced demand and trading activity. The average price on the day-ahead market was recorded at €96.55/MWh, which represents a substantial 17.8% decrease from March’s average baseload price of €117.4/MWh.
In addition to the overall price drop, the average peak price on the day-ahead market fell to €60.43/MWh, marking a significant reduction of 41.6% compared to the previous month. This sharp decline in peak pricing indicates a shift in market conditions, possibly driven by lower consumption patterns.
The trading volume on the day-ahead market also reflected these trends, totaling 2.44 million MWh, which is down 12.7% from March’s volume of 2.79 million MWh. Year-on-year comparisons show a decrease of 2%, as April 2025 recorded a trading volume of 2.49 million MWh.
<pConversely, the intraday continuous market saw a slight uptick in activity, with total trading volume reaching 1,087,209 MWh, representing a marginal increase of 0.2% from March. This contrast suggests that while day-ahead market trading has slowed, intraday trading may be adapting to meet immediate demand fluctuations.
The membership landscape on HUPX has also seen changes; as of April 2026, there were 120 registered members on the day-ahead market—an increase of four members from March—while the intraday continuous market maintained 112 registered members. This growth in membership may indicate ongoing interest in participation despite the recent price volatility.
The developments observed in April 2026 underscore the complexities of Hungary’s electricity market, where price fluctuations and trading volumes are closely tied to broader economic factors and consumer behavior. Stakeholders will need to monitor these trends closely as they navigate an evolving energy landscape.
