Recent capacity auctions conducted by Greece’s gas transmission operator, DESFA, have underscored the robust long-term demand for LNG infrastructure in Greece. The auction cycle, which spans from 2026 to 2040, took place between October 2025 and January 2026, resulting in nearly complete booking of the available capacity at the Revythoussa LNG terminal.
During this period, DESFA made available 413 LNG unloading slots, translating to approximately 342.5 TWh of energy or around 30.6 billion cubic meters (bcm) of natural gas. Market participants demonstrated significant interest by booking 409 slots, equating to 340.5 TWh or 30.42 bcm. This high level of participation indicates a sustained demand for long-term access to Greece’s LNG resources, with up to five users reserving capacity each year.
The strong auction results are closely linked to recent enhancements in Greece’s gas transportation network. The introduction of new compression stations in Komotini and Ampelia, along with comprehensive system upgrades, has improved the capability to transport gas towards northern markets. This development strengthens Greece’s position as a dependable entry point for LNG in the broader regional context.
Prior to this latest auction, significant portions of capacity had already been allocated in earlier rounds, with all cargoes for the years 2027, 2028, and 2029 fully booked. The remaining volumes for 2026 and 2030 were secured in the recent auction process, leading to a complete reservation of all offered LNG unloading and regasification capacities for these years.
