A significant development in the Greek renewable energy landscape has emerged with the announcement of a partnership between Metlen Energy & Metals and the Tsakos Group. This collaboration aims to establish a large-scale hybrid renewable project in central Greece, featuring a solar power plant integrated with battery storage capabilities. The initiative represents one of the most ambitious hybrid renewable projects currently under consideration in the region.
The partnership will be structured through a special-purpose project company, where Metlen will hold a 40% stake and the Tsakos Group will own the remaining 60%. The project is designed to deliver approximately 252 MW of solar capacity, complemented by 375 MWh of battery storage. This combination is expected to enhance operational flexibility and provide critical support to the grid.
Metlen will spearhead the technical aspects of the project, which includes engineering, construction, and managing electricity sales through its proprietary energy management platform. This integrated approach is aimed at optimizing the synergy between solar generation and storage solutions, thereby improving overall efficiency. The implementation phase is slated to commence in 2026, with commercial operations anticipated to begin in early 2028.
While the total investment value for this project has not been disclosed, its scale positions it among the largest hybrid renewable initiatives currently being developed in Greece. This highlights a growing trend within the Greek energy sector, where diverse industrial entities are increasingly collaborating with established energy firms to facilitate the deployment of storage-backed renewable projects.
For the Tsakos Group, this agreement signifies a strategic move towards diversification beyond its traditional shipping operations. The group has been progressively expanding its footprint in renewable energy, actively engaging in solar projects and building a pipeline of green investments across Greece.
This partnership underscores a broader shift within Greece’s energy sector as it transitions towards more sustainable practices. By fostering collaborations that enhance network stability and support clean energy objectives, both companies are contributing to the country’s ongoing efforts to bolster its renewable energy infrastructure.
