ContourGlobal has made a significant move into Greece’s renewable energy sector by acquiring a 37 MW solar portfolio and establishing a robust pipeline of battery storage projects. This entry is part of the company’s strategic expansion across Europe, emphasizing clean energy generation and enhanced system flexibility.

The solar portfolio comprises 26 operational power plants that have been developed over more than ten years. Previously owned by Quest Energy, these facilities benefit from long-term support mechanisms and collectively produce approximately 51 GWh of electricity annually. The acquisition is part of a broader strategy involving multiple asset purchases, although specific financial details remain undisclosed.

In addition to the solar assets, ContourGlobal has secured full ownership of standalone battery storage projects with an impressive combined capacity of up to 500 MW and 2,000 MWh. This pipeline was developed through agreements with Spanish developer FRV and Greek company Zephiros, significantly enhancing ContourGlobal’s presence in one of Europe’s rapidly expanding battery markets.

A notable component of this initiative is the Taxiarches battery project located in the Thessaly region. This facility, with a capacity of 100 MW and 400 MWh, is fully construction-ready and is anticipated to be among the first merchant battery projects in Greece, operating without long-term contracts and generating revenue based on market conditions. Construction is set to commence shortly, with commercial operations expected to start in early 2027.

The remaining battery projects, which add up to 400 MW and 1,600 MWh, have already received environmental approvals and essential permits. They qualify under Greece’s priority framework for standalone energy storage introduced in 2025, positioning them favorably for expedited development as the demand for grid flexibility continues to grow.

Greece is regarded by ContourGlobal as a strategic market within its European growth strategy. The company already manages renewable generation and storage assets across Italy, Spain, Austria, and Bulgaria. The increasing penetration of renewable energy sources in Greece is driving a substantial demand for large-scale battery solutions.

Leveraging its global experience in battery storage projects, including recent initiatives in the United States, ContourGlobal aims to utilize Greece as a platform for scaling energy storage solutions throughout Europe. These investments are expected to play a crucial role in facilitating Greece’s energy transition while reinforcing ContourGlobal’s ambition to become a leading independent player in the renewables sector and large-scale energy storage.
