Gross electricity production in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH) reached 461 GWh in May 2026. That figure was 10% lower than in May last year, when output totalled 512 GWh. The change coincided with shifts in the coal generation mix and the end of coke production.
Generation mix and net output
Hydropower plants provided 30.6% of gross electricity production in May 2026. Thermal power plants accounted for 53.8%, while wind farms contributed 15.6%. Net electricity production stood at 411 GWh, including 121 GWh from hydropower, 219 GWh from thermal generation, and 71 GWh from wind.
Electricity trade flows
Electricity imports fell to 89 GWh in May 2026, down from 142 GWh in the same month a year earlier. Exports also decreased to 56 GWh, compared with 117 GWh in May 2025.
Fuel production and coke shutdown
Brown coal production increased to 311,688 tons, representing a 4.9% year-on-year rise. Lignite output dropped to 100,369 tons, a decline of 23.6% versus 131,316 tons recorded in May 2025.
Coke production fell to zero in May 2026 after the permanent closure of the Lukavac coke plant. At the same time, the generation figures reflected the updated fuel and production conditions across hydropower, thermal capacity, and wind.
