Gross electricity production in Bosnia and Herzegovina reached 988 GWh in April 2026, according to the Agency for Statistics of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). The figure compares with 1,205 GWh recorded in the same month of the previous year. The change reflects shifts across generation sources and cross-border flows.
Generation mix: hydropower up, thermal down
Hydropower plants provided 48.8% of total electricity generation in the country’s overall production mix. Thermal power plants accounted for 38.5%, while solar and wind contributed 12.7%. Net hydropower output totaled 477 GWh in April 2026, up 7.7% year-on-year.
Thermal power generation fell to 338 GWh, down 40.5% compared with April 2025. Electricity from renewable sources, including wind and solar, increased to 126 GWh. That level represented an 18.9% rise on an annual basis.
Electricity trade: imports rise, exports fall
Electricity imports increased by 11.5% to 455 GWh in April 2026, compared with 408 GWh a year earlier. Exports decreased by 14.1% to 575 GWh, down from 669 GWh in April 2025. These movements indicate a higher net import position during the month.
Fuel supply: lignite and brown coal decline; gas imports increase
Lignite output in Bosnia and Herzegovina totaled 440,000 tons in April 2026, falling 28.1% year-on-year. Brown coal production dropped by 23.4% to 292,000 tons. Natural gas imports rose to 18.92 million cubic meters, up 8.5% from 17.43 million cubic meters in the same period last year.
