In January 2026, the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH) reported a notable increase in gross electricity production, reaching 800 GWh. This figure represents a 7.82% rise from the 746 GWh generated in January 2025. The composition of this production was dominated by hydropower plants, which accounted for 54.8%, followed by thermal power plants at 38.4%, and wind farms contributing 6.8%.
Net electricity production for the month stood at 760 GWh. The breakdown reveals that hydropower facilities produced 435 GWh, while thermal power plants contributed 270 GWh, and wind farms added 55 GWh. Notably, electricity imports decreased significantly to 131 GWh, down from 254 GWh in January 2025, whereas exports fell to 55 GWh, compared to 148 GWh a year prior.
The coal sector experienced substantial declines during this period. Brown coal output was recorded at 207,109 tons, marking a dramatic 39.9% decrease from the previous year’s output of 344,755 tons. Lignite production also saw a slight reduction, dropping to 103,517 tons from 109,852 tons, reflecting a 5.8% drop. Additionally, coke production fell to 26,190 tons, an 18.3% decline from the previous year’s total of 32,068 tons.
This shift towards increased electricity generation alongside reduced reliance on imports and diminished fossil fuel production highlights significant changes in the energy landscape of FBiH. These developments indicate a potential transition in energy policy and market dynamics within the region, as local demand patterns evolve and the fuel mix adapts accordingly.
