Econergy Renewable Energy has begun commercial operations at the 59 MW Iancu Jianu solar plant in Romania. The project adds to the developer’s growing portfolio of photovoltaic assets in the country. It is also described as part of a broader solar-plus-storage strategy.
The Iancu Jianu facility is the fifth grid-connected solar project developed by Econergy in Romania. Following its commissioning, Econergy’s Romanian portfolio connected to the grid or ready for connection totals 743 MW. A further 861 MW is reported to be under construction.
Iancu Jianu battery storage planned for 2027
Econergy plans to expand the Iancu Jianu site into a combined solar-and-storage installation. The company intends to install a 35 MW/70 MWh battery energy storage system during the second quarter of 2027. The planned configuration provides two hours of storage duration.
The battery is intended to shift electricity generated by the solar plant toward periods when market prices are more favourable, rather than selling output exclusively during peak solar-production hours. Econergy also says the storage will support additional participation opportunities in balancing markets and during periods of high electricity demand.
Storage role amid changing solar price patterns
Econergy links the planned storage addition to changes in Romania’s renewable market as solar generation increases. It points to wider differences between low-priced daytime periods and higher-value evening hours. In this context, batteries are described as a way to reduce exposure to price cannibalisation while adding revenue opportunities beyond direct electricity sales.
European pipeline includes projects across multiple countries
Econergy plans to apply a similar solar-plus-storage model across other European projects. The company reports that its European development pipeline currently exceeds 12.5 GW, covering Romania, the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, Poland, Spain and Greece. The Iancu Jianu project is presented as an example of how integrated renewable generation and storage may be deployed across that wider pipeline.
