In January 2026, Croatia’s net electricity production reached 1,736 GWh, reflecting a robust 19.1% increase from the previous year’s output of 1,457 GWh. This surge highlights significant advancements across various segments of the nation’s energy sector, as reported by the Croatian Bureau of Statistics.
Hydropower facilities led the charge, generating 835 GWh, which constitutes 48.1% of total electricity production. Thermal power plants followed with a contribution of 539 GWh (31%). Wind energy also played a vital role, producing 250 GWh (14.4%), while solar power’s share, although smaller, is on the rise, with 32 GWh or 1.84% of total output. This trend underscores the ongoing expansion of renewable energy capacity in Croatia.
Simultaneously, the country experienced a notable reduction in electricity imports, which fell to 849 GWh, marking a 20.5% decrease compared to January 2025’s imports of 1,068 GWh. Exports also saw a decline, totaling 709 GWh, down 7.1% from the previous year’s figure of 763 GWh. These shifts indicate changing dynamics in regional electricity flows and market interactions.
In terms of hydrocarbons, Croatia’s natural gas production increased slightly to 64 million cubic meters, representing a year-on-year growth of 1.6%. Conversely, natural gas imports saw a significant drop to 207 million cubic meters, down 22.5% from the same period last year, suggesting a move towards greater self-sufficiency in energy supply.
The crude oil sector faced challenges, with production declining to 38,000 tons, a decrease of 7.3% from the previous year. Additionally, the output of petroleum products fell to 289,000 tons, down from 330,000 tons recorded in January 2025. This decline reflects reduced activity within refining operations and may have implications for domestic fuel supply and pricing.
