Burgas grid connection marks Bulgaria’s 602 MWh battery storage addition

A 602 MWh grid-scale battery storage facility has been connected to Bulgaria’s electricity grid in the coastal city of Burgas. The companies involved described the project as one of the most significant energy storage additions in Bulgaria in recent years.

Project developers and battery technology

The installation was developed by Bulgarian renewable energy company Solarpro Technology in cooperation with Chinese battery manufacturer CATL. The companies said the project combined local engineering expertise with CATL battery technology solutions.

Solarpro Technology served as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor. Its scope included design, installation and full integration of the system into the grid infrastructure. The facility uses CATL’s TENER battery storage technology.

Grid role and expected market impact

The companies stated that the installation increases Bulgaria’s total energy storage capacity by around 10%. They said the system is designed for large-scale grid applications and high operational flexibility.

The battery system is expected to primarily provide balancing services. It will support the transmission system operator in managing fluctuations between electricity supply and demand, particularly when renewable generation is high. The project is also described as absorbing excess electricity and releasing it during peak demand.

The companies said the operation is expected to improve grid stability and reduce volatility in the Bulgarian power market. They also characterized the facility as among the largest battery storage installations in Eastern Europe.

Plans for further storage projects in Southeast Europe

After completion, Solarpro Technology and CATL confirmed plans to continue their cooperation on additional battery storage projects in Bulgaria. They also cited further work across wider Southeast European markets.

The companies said the project represents a step toward expanding flexible, renewable-based power systems in the region. They linked this development to continued growth of grid-scale storage capacity across Southeast Europe.
