Bosnia and Herzegovina’s state-owned utility, Elektroprivreda Republike Srpske (ERS), has initiated a procurement process aimed at evaluating the potential expansion of the Visegrad hydropower plant. This initiative, managed through its subsidiary Hidroelektrane na Drini, seeks to install an additional generating unit, which is crucial for enhancing the plant’s operational capacity.

The tender documentation outlines a comprehensive plan to modernize the aging facility through detailed technical and economic assessments. This modernization effort is focused on establishing key performance indicators that will guide ERS in determining whether to advance to subsequent project phases. The estimated contract value stands at approximately €460,000 excluding VAT, with a deadline for bid submissions set for 20 February 2026.

The project is structured into two consecutive phases. The initial phase involves drafting the main design for the new turbine-generator unit, which must be completed within five months following the contract’s commencement. This will be succeeded by a 30-day period designated for technical coordination and formal approval from the contracting authority.

In the subsequent phase, the chosen contractor will be responsible for preparing a preliminary feasibility study, which is expected to be finalized within two months after the main design documentation receives approval. The contract will be awarded based on the lowest compliant price that meets all technical specifications outlined in the tender.

The Visegrad hydropower plant, situated on the Drina River upstream from Visegrad, has been operational since 1989. This run-of-river facility, characterized by its gravity concrete dam and powerhouse located on the left bank, has been generating electricity for over three decades. The long-standing operational history of HPP Visegrad provides a solid foundation for ERS’s plans to enhance and expand the plant’s capacity.
