The Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina has approved a significant loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB) aimed at financing the Bitovnja wind farm project. This decision, facilitated by the Ministry of Finance and Treasury, aligns with the existing framework agreement between the nation and the EIB, thus streamlining the administrative process necessary for advancing this renewable energy initiative.
The EIB is set to provide up to €56 million for the construction of the wind farm, which will be located in the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton, near Konjic. The site is characterized by its mountainous terrain, with elevations ranging from 1,530 to 1,700 metres, making it suitable for wind energy generation.
As part of the agreement, the state-owned power utility EPBiH will be responsible for repaying the loan and managing all related financial risks. This includes providing necessary guarantees and collateral to secure the funding, underscoring EPBiH’s commitment to advancing Bosnia and Herzegovina’s renewable energy goals.
The Bitovnja wind farm is projected to feature 15 wind turbines, collectively generating approximately 90 MW of power. In addition to the turbines, the project will include essential infrastructure such as a substation, transmission connections, and access roads, which are critical for operational efficiency.
The total investment required for this project is estimated at around €100 million. Once operational, it is anticipated that the facility will produce at least 110 GWh of electricity annually, significantly enhancing the country’s renewable energy capacity and contributing to its sustainability targets.
