The ALPEX electricity exchange in Albania is set to enhance its market infrastructure through a significant upgrade, following the awarding of a €3 million contract to a consortium led by ATHEX, the Athens Stock Exchange. This decision comes as part of ALPEX’s strategy to modernize its operations and improve connectivity with European electricity markets.
The consortium, which includes the Hellenic Energy Exchange and Enex Clear, will be responsible for designing and implementing a new digital trading and clearing system. This platform aims to facilitate both day-ahead and intraday electricity trading, promising improvements in execution speed, low-latency performance, and secure, anonymous transactions for market participants.
One of the critical features of this new platform will be its ability to connect the electricity markets of Kosovo and Albania with established European trading frameworks. This integration will enable participation in mechanisms such as the Single Day-Ahead Coupling (SDAC) and the Single Intraday Coupling (SIDC), marking a vital step towards enhanced regional and European market integration.
The implementation of this project is projected to take up to 54 months, highlighting the technical challenges involved in merging national markets into broader European systems. Established in October 2020 by the Albanian and Kosovo transmission system operators, OST and KOSTT, ALPEX aims to foster a more competitive power market within the region.
