AES Bulgaria has announced a significant boost in electricity generation from its coal-fired thermal power plant, AES Galabovo, which produced 2.62 million MWh in 2024. This figure represents a remarkable increase of 35.8% compared to the previous year’s output of 1.93 million MWh. The plant’s contribution to Bulgaria’s energy landscape is substantial, supplying approximately 7% of the nation’s total electricity consumption last year.
In December 2024 alone, AES Galabovo generated 256,000 MWh, maintaining its role as a critical player in the country’s energy supply by accounting for about 7% of Bulgaria’s electricity generation for that month. This consistent output underscores the plant’s operational reliability and its importance in meeting domestic energy demands.
The history of AES Galabovo dates back to 1999 when AES Corporation acquired a majority stake in the Maritsa East 1 power plant, which was subsequently renamed AES Galabovo in 2009. The full acquisition of the facility was completed in 2005, marking a significant investment by the US-based corporation into Bulgaria’s energy sector.
This increase in production at AES Galabovo highlights not only the plant’s operational efficiency but also reflects broader trends within Bulgaria’s energy market as it seeks to balance coal dependency with evolving regulatory and environmental pressures.
