The expansion of nuclear energy capacity in Romania is advancing as the Export-Import Bank of the United States prepares to finalize a significant financing agreement with EnergoNuclear, a subsidiary of Nuclearelectrica. This agreement, which is expected to provide up to 57.2 million dollars in funding, represents a crucial development for the construction of new nuclear units.
The financing will facilitate the long-anticipated development of Units 3 and 4 at the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant, a project that carries an estimated investment requirement of 6 to 7 billion euros. Upon completion, these new reactors are projected to substantially enhance Romania’s baseload electricity generation capabilities while decreasing dependence on fossil fuels.
Approval for the US-backed loan was granted in September 2023, highlighting the strengthening strategic partnership between Romania and the United States in nuclear energy initiatives. This project aligns with broader objectives aimed at improving energy security and diversifying Romania’s energy generation portfolio through large-scale low-carbon infrastructure investments.
