TPP Šoštanj has successfully completed its inaugural year of providing district heating services to the Šaleška Valley, demonstrating robust operational capabilities. In 2025, the facility generated a total of 276 GWh of heat and 1,848 GWh of electricity, effectively fulfilling its commitment to deliver uninterrupted heating to local households and businesses. The plant’s management confirmed that production units operated reliably throughout the year, aligning with the objectives set under the current emergency legislation governing operations.
Looking ahead to 2026, TPP Šoštanj has adjusted its production targets to align with anticipated demand. The plant aims for an output of approximately 265 GWh of heat and 1,519 GWh of electricity, while coal consumption is projected to slightly exceed 1.1 million tons. Plant officials noted that these figures remain adaptable; should market conditions for electricity improve, there is potential for increased generation and higher coal usage. Additionally, coal supply from Velenje Coal Mine is secure and adheres to the annual mining plan and contractual agreements.
In terms of commercial strategy, TPP Šoštanj has already secured sales for a significant portion of its anticipated electricity output for 2026. Four auctions conducted in 2025 resulted in contracts covering 73% of planned production, enhancing revenue predictability for the upcoming year. Investment initiatives are also underway, notably involving substantial upgrades to the second 42 MW gas unit. This project aims to increase capacity and follows similar enhancements made to the first gas unit. The combined value of these upgrades amounts to €17.7 million, underscoring the plant’s commitment to improving operational flexibility and efficiency while maintaining its primary heating responsibilities.
The recently approved coal price of €7.19/GJ is expected to primarily influence state compensation mechanisms rather than day-to-day operational costs. As TPP Šoštanj continues to navigate the evolving energy landscape, its focus on reliability and strategic investments positions it favorably within Slovenia’s energy sector.
