The Termoelektrarna Brestanica (TEB), Slovenia’s largest gas-fired power facility, has set a new record for monthly output in January, responding to severe winter conditions that have challenged energy systems across the region. With a total capacity exceeding 400 MW, TEB operates seven gas units that have proven essential during this period of heightened demand.
Technical management at TEB reported that the combination of prolonged cold spells and significantly increased electricity prices rendered gas turbines economically viable despite their traditionally high operational costs. This shift facilitated elevated output levels, particularly as January progressed, culminating in a historic production milestone for the plant.
Typically, gas-fired plants in Slovenia serve roles such as short-term balancing and emergency backup. However, the harsh winter weather and low hydrological conditions necessitated a reevaluation of operational strategies. During peak demand periods in January, certain units operated for as long as 15 hours daily, far surpassing their standard utilization rates.
Operational protocols dictated that not all units were dispatched at once; several remained on standby to support the nuclear facility at Krško. The operational focus was directed toward utilizing the newest and most efficient units first, with additional units brought online only when market demands and system requirements warranted such actions.
The performance of TEB in January underscores the critical role that gas-fired generation plays within Slovenia’s electricity framework during extreme weather events. It illustrates how flexible thermal capacity can transition from a reserve status to a central operational role when market dynamics and system needs align effectively.
