Slovenia’s sole pump-storage hydropower facility, HPP Avce, is poised for a substantial technical enhancement as Soske Elektrarne Nova Gorica (SENG), a subsidiary of HSE, has reached an agreement with Japan’s Hitachi Mitsubishi Hydro Corporation (HM Hydro) for the refurbishment of its generator. This upgrade is pivotal in reinforcing the facility’s role in Slovenia’s energy landscape.
The modernization efforts are slated to commence in 2027, with an estimated duration of seven months. The project will be financed entirely through SENG’s own resources, reflecting a commitment to ensuring stable and dependable operations for the hydropower plant over the long term. While financial specifics of the contract remain undisclosed, the investment underscores the importance of maintaining operational integrity.
This upcoming refurbishment marks the second major overhaul of HPP Avce. The first refurbishment, conducted between 2018 and 2019, yielded positive technical outcomes, prompting further investment to prolong the plant’s operational lifespan. The latest upgrade aims to guarantee full availability until the next major reconstruction is projected around summer 2036.
Since its commissioning in 2010, HPP Avce has established itself as a vital component of Slovenia’s energy system. It was one of the early adopters of variable speed technology in Europe, enhancing both operational flexibility and efficiency during pumping operations. This technological advancement positions HPP Avce as a leader in modern hydropower practices.
Within the HSE Group, HPP Avce is regarded as a cornerstone of Slovenia’s green energy strategy. By storing excess electricity during low demand periods and reinjecting it into the grid when consumption peaks, the facility plays a critical role in balancing the electricity system.
