In a recent decision, Slovenian authorities have opted not to draw from the nation’s strategic fuel reserves, citing adequate existing supplies to meet current demand. This conclusion was reached following discussions involving government officials and major fuel distributors, including Petrol and MOL.
The meeting included key ministers responsible for energy and economic affairs, along with representatives from Slovenia’s largest fuel suppliers. After analyzing recent market trends, the consensus was that there is no immediate need for emergency reserves, at least until the end of March.
Officials clarified that the sporadic fuel shortages reported at various petrol stations are not indicative of a national storage deficit. Instead, these disruptions are attributed to heightened consumption levels and logistical challenges in fuel distribution to certain areas.
Demand has surged particularly at stations located near borders, highways, and major transit routes. The relatively lower fuel prices in Slovenia compared to neighboring countries have drawn foreign drivers, creating temporary pressures on specific sales points. Petrol has confirmed that its storage facilities are receiving consistent deliveries, ensuring that the overall supply chain remains intact. The shortages observed at some locations are primarily due to spikes in consumption rather than supply chain interruptions.
The government had previously contemplated coordinating a release of reserves alongside incoming fuel shipments at the port of Koper. However, current forecasts suggest that tanker deliveries will proceed without any disruptions. Additionally, authorities have decided against imposing restrictions on fuel purchases by foreign motorists, deeming the situation manageable.
Finance Minister Klemen Bostjancic emphasized that the government is actively monitoring the situation and maintains regular communication with fuel distributors. Both state officials and energy companies are equipped with mechanisms to respond effectively should market conditions evolve.
