Dravske Elektrarne Maribor (DEM) has successfully completed a significant modernization initiative at three of its hydropower facilities, aimed at boosting operational efficiency and ensuring long-term reliability. This comprehensive upgrade encompasses the plants located in Dravograd, Vuzenica, and Mariborski otok, marking a pivotal development in Slovenia’s energy sector.
The modernization project spanned over three years, during which key secondary systems were fully upgraded. The introduction of advanced process equipment and digital technologies is expected to extend the operational lifespan of these plants by at least 20 years. Such enhancements are critical as the region continues to navigate the complexities of energy production and sustainability.
A central aspect of this modernization effort involved the integration of sophisticated data management systems, which facilitate real-time monitoring of operations and enable predictive maintenance capabilities. These improvements are complemented by advancements in cybersecurity, ensuring that primary equipment remains effective throughout its operational cycle.
One of the standout features of this initiative is the rollout of a newly developed digital turbine control system, crafted by DEM’s in-house engineering team. This innovation not only signifies a move towards greater technological independence but also enhances the optimization of hydropower plant performance, positioning DEM favorably within the evolving energy landscape.
This modernization marks a crucial milestone in DEM’s digital transformation journey, reinforcing both operational resilience and sustainability within its hydropower fleet. As Slovenia continues to prioritize renewable energy sources, such advancements will play an essential role in meeting future energy demands while maintaining environmental stewardship.
