Severe Winds Disrupt Slovenia’s Power System, Cross-Border Supply Stable

Severe wind conditions recently impacted Slovenia’s electricity infrastructure, particularly in the northern regions, leading to significant operational challenges. Wind gusts reached up to 150 km/h, prompting the Environment Agency to issue a red weather warning on March 26, which remained active through March 27. Despite these disruptions, domestic electricity supply was maintained due to adequate backup network capacity.

The extreme weather resulted in the temporary shutdown of two critical interconnection lines between Slovenia and Croatia: the 400 kV Divača–Melina line and the 220 kV Podlog–Žerjavinec connection. These outages underscored the susceptibility of cross-border energy infrastructure to severe weather events, raising concerns about reliability during such incidents.

According to ELES, Slovenia’s transmission system operator, no damage was reported on the Slovenian side of the network. However, Croatian maintenance teams discovered a fault on the line toward Melina. Due to hazardous weather conditions, immediate repair efforts were not feasible; nevertheless, electricity supply remained uninterrupted thanks to alternative transmission routes.

The Podlog–Žerjavinec line was successfully restored by midday on March 27, while the Divača–Melina connection resumed service on March 28 after repairs were completed on the Croatian side. Although these disruptions posed increased operational strain on the system, overall stability was preserved, preventing any wider supply interruptions for consumers.
