As Serbia approaches the end of 2025, the country boasts a significantly enhanced renewable energy portfolio, now totaling 3,683.4 MW of installed green capacity. This growth is attributed to several key projects that have come online in recent weeks, marking a pivotal moment for Serbia’s energy landscape.
The expansion of wind energy has been particularly noteworthy. The 66 MW Kostolac wind park has commenced trial operations, while a substantial portion of the Cibuk 2 project, with 133 MW synchronized to the national grid out of a planned 155 MW, underscores the sector’s rapid development. Currently, Serbia operates 13 wind farms with a combined capacity of 807 MW, and analysts predict that total wind capacity could exceed 1 GW by mid-2026.
In contrast, solar energy generation is progressing at a steadier pace. Utility-scale photovoltaic installations contribute just over 192 MW, supplemented by an additional 126 MW from prosumers. This steady increase reflects Serbia’s efforts to diversify its renewable energy sources.
The backbone of Serbia’s renewable electricity supply remains hydropower, which accounts for 2,507 MW of conventional hydro capacity. Additionally, two pump-storage facilities contribute another 639 MW, highlighting the importance of hydropower in balancing the energy mix.
Smaller renewable technologies also play a role in the overall capacity. The Serbian grid includes 48 biogas plants with a combined output of nearly 49 MW, as well as a biomass-fired plant generating 2.4 MW. These contributions are essential for achieving a more sustainable energy system.
Looking ahead, Serbia has set an ambitious goal to derive 45.2% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. However, the country faces challenges, including delays in various planned projects that could hinder progress toward these targets. Ensuring timely implementation and sustaining growth will be critical for Serbia to achieve its long-term energy transition objectives.
