The Serbian oil company NIS will maintain its operations uninterrupted following a recent 60-day extension granted by the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). This extension, which allows NIS to continue functioning until mid-June, is crucial for the stability of Serbia’s energy sector as discussions regarding the company’s ownership structure are ongoing.
Dubravka Đedović, Serbia’s Minister of Energy and Mining, highlighted that this extension facilitates more predictable crude oil procurement planning and ensures stable operations at the Pancevo refinery. It also guarantees a continuous supply of fuels to the domestic market, which is essential for short-term energy security and overall market stability.
This development is indicative of progress in the negotiations between MOL Group and Gazprom Neft concerning a potential restructuring of NIS ownership. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to maintaining operational continuity, protecting jobs, and ensuring system stability throughout this transitional period.
In parallel, the Serbian government is actively working on two fronts: seeking a permanent removal of NIS from the U.S. sanctions framework and increasing its ownership stake by 5%. This move aims to enhance the state’s influence over strategic decisions within the company.
As negotiations are set to escalate in the coming days, senior representatives from MOL Group are expected to visit Serbia for further discussions. These meetings will involve operational teams as they navigate the complexities surrounding NIS’s future structure.
