As the expiration date for its current operating license approaches, Serbian oil company NIS has formally submitted a request for a new permit to the US Department of the Treasury. This action is critical for maintaining operational continuity in light of ongoing regulatory constraints affecting the company.
The existing license, granted by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) in March, will expire on 17 April. To mitigate any potential disruptions to its operations, NIS has proactively initiated the renewal process, emphasizing its commitment to uninterrupted business activities in a challenging regulatory environment.
Simultaneously, US authorities have extended the deadline for negotiations involving key stakeholders GazpromNeft and MOL Group until 22 May. These discussions are pivotal as they aim to address the ownership structure of NIS, particularly concerning the significant Russian stake that has drawn scrutiny from Western regulators.
NIS has faced sanctions since 9 October 2025, primarily due to concerns about its ownership structure and the extent of Russian influence within the company.
