Romania’s Petromidia refinery, the country’s largest oil processing facility, is currently undergoing a routine maintenance overhaul, as confirmed by its operator, Rompetrol Rafinare. This announcement contradicts recent statements made by Energy Minister Bogdan Ivan, who had indicated that the maintenance work would be postponed to ensure stability in the domestic fuel market.
The Minister previously noted that to maintain supply, authorities had increased crude oil imports significantly and that the Petrobrazi refinery was operating at full capacity. He also mentioned ongoing efforts to restart the Petrotel Lukoil refinery, which would facilitate crude imports following an informal authorization from the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).
Despite these claims from government officials, Rompetrol has clarified that production at Petromidia has been suspended as part of a planned overhaul that is currently in progress. The company emphasized that this shutdown is in line with a predetermined maintenance schedule designed to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the refinery.
Rompetrol’s structured maintenance program includes major general overhauls every four years and intermediate technological shutdowns every two years for additional inspections and works. This systematic approach is critical for maintaining operational integrity and performance standards.
Petromidia plays a pivotal role in Romania’s refining landscape, boasting an annual processing capacity of approximately 5.9 million tons of crude oil. This capacity accounts for nearly half of the nation’s total refining capability, underscoring its significance within the sector.
