Romania’s electricity and heat generation sector is poised for a gradual increase over the coming years. According to the autumn edition of the National Strategy and Forecast Commission’s outlook for 2025–2029, modest growth is expected in 2026, with steady gains projected to continue through 2029.

The Commission forecasts a rise in energy production and supply by 0.8% in 2026 compared to 2025. This growth trajectory is set to strengthen, with an anticipated 2% increase in 2027, followed by a further rise of 2.3% in 2028. The growth rate is expected to moderate to 1.5% in 2029, indicating a consistent but slowing expansion trend.

In parallel, Romania’s industrial sector is also projected to expand. Overall industrial output is expected to grow by 0.5% in 2026, with acceleration to 1.6% in 2027. This upward momentum is set to reach 2.2% in 2028, before easing slightly to 1.9% in 2029.

<pConversely, the extractive industries are forecasted to face challenges initially, with a projected contraction of 1.4% in 2026. However, recovery is anticipated, with growth rates of 0.7% in 2027, rising to 1.4% in 2028, and then slowing to 1.1% in 2029. This indicates a gradual rebound for this sector following its downturn.

The outlined projections highlight significant trends within Romania’s energy landscape, reflecting both challenges and opportunities across various sectors. As the country navigates these developments, stakeholders will need to adapt strategies accordingly to leverage growth while addressing sector-specific hurdles.
