The Iernut plant, with a capacity of 430 MW, has already received approximately €64 million in state funding. However, repeated setbacks have necessitated multiple requests for deadline extensions. As reported by the Ministry of Energy, the project is currently at 97.5% physical completion and 85.9% financial execution, with progress on the latest construction contract exceeding 90%. To expedite the project’s final stages, Romgaz will act as the general contractor through a dedicated project unit, taking over essential works and service contracts from previously engaged subcontractors.
Construction originally commenced in 2016 under a contract with Duro Felguera and Romelectro, with initial operational plans set for early 2020. The contract was terminated in 2021 due to performance issues, leading Romgaz to re-engage Duro Felguera in 2023 primarily for access to critical software and documentation. A subsequent completion deadline was set for December 19, 2025; however, this agreement also faced termination when Duro Felguera attempted to suspend work in August—a move that Romgaz contested.
Management has indicated that identifying remaining tasks and initiating procurement processes will require time, followed by an estimated nine months for final construction and commissioning activities. While Romgaz remains optimistic about achieving its end-2026 goal, it also recognizes that certain risks are beyond its control.
In the concluding phase of the project, General Electric is expected to play a pivotal role by providing support for the final commissioning of the plant along with supplying gas turbines and the distributed control system. This partnership will be critical as Romgaz seeks to bring the long-delayed Iernut facility online amidst an evolving energy landscape in Romania.
