Romania solar generation hits record 2,634 MW as exports rise

Romanian photovoltaic plants delivered the highest instantaneous electricity output recorded in the country, with solar generation reaching a new peak. The record was registered at 11:59 AM, when solar installations produced 2,634 MW, according to transmission system operator Transelectrica. This level surpassed the previous high of 2,580 MW, set on 29 May. Additional solar projects are expected to come online during the year, with further peaks possible before winter.

Solar output during moderate demand conditions

The record period coincided with relatively moderate electricity demand across Romania. Total national generation was around 6,000 MW, affected by the temporary unavailability of one nuclear reactor and lower wind production. Several other generation sources also contributed less than usual. Electricity consumption from the national grid stood at approximately 4,450 MW, with part of the reduction linked to higher self-consumption from prosumers.

Photovoltaics’ share in domestic generation and grid supply

During the peak interval, solar became Romania’s dominant generation source. Photovoltaic plants accounted for around 43% of total domestic electricity production. They also supplied nearly 60% of electricity consumed from the grid, excluding output from residential and commercial prosumers. The figures reflect how solar output aligned with grid demand during the record window.

Distributed capacity growth and cross-border flows

Romania’s distributed generation base has continued expanding alongside utility-scale additions. The country has more than 320,000 prosumers, with combined installed solar capacity exceeding 3,700 MW. Utility-scale solar plants reached approximately 3,340 MW of installed capacity, based on data from national energy regulator ANRE. At the time of peak production, Romania exported around 1,600 MW of electricity to neighboring countries.
