Variable renewables increase, but other generation shifts
Romanian variable renewable output rose 37.8% in Week 34 versus Week 30, among the strongest increases across the monitored markets. The change coincided with a different movement across the rest of the generation stack. Hydropower generation fell 22.66%, while thermal generation increased 45.86%. Net electricity imports declined 55.63%, indicating a larger share of domestic demand being met by local supply.
Week 34 day-ahead pricing and subsequent tightening
The Romanian Week 34 day-ahead average reached €152.54/MWh, up 6.6% from Week 33. After the reporting week, prices continued to tighten. On 26 August, Romania’s day-ahead price reached €186.50/MWh, the highest figure cited among Southeast Europe markets for that day.
Timing, flexibility and hydro availability affect market exposure
Total renewable volume alone did not explain the price outcome cited for Romania. Wind and solar production can increase while reduced flexible hydro generation leaves the system more reliant on expensive thermal units during specific hours. In that context, the interaction between variable output and dispatchable capacity availability becomes relevant to how wholesale prices develop.
Technology mix and cross-border flows
Romania’s case also highlighted differences in system value across technologies. A megawatt-hour of solar electricity produced during a well-supplied midday period does not provide the same system value as hydro generation available during the evening peak. A similar distinction applies to cross-border trade: Romania reduced net imports substantially, which can support supply security, while also implying greater need for domestic higher-cost production when neighbouring supplies are not economically or physically available.
