According to data from the National Institute for Statistics (INS), Romania’s net coal production for the first five months of 2024 totaled 858,700 tons of oil equivalent, marking a 20.9% decrease (203,800 tons of oil equivalent) compared to the same period in 2023. During this period, Romania imported 87,100 tons of oil equivalent of coal, which is 17.8% less (18,800 tons of oil equivalent) than the previous year.

The National Strategy and Forecast Commission (CNSP) projects a continued decline in coal production and imports from 2024 to 2027 as new energy production capacities come online. The forecast estimates coal production to fall to 1.92 million tons of oil equivalent in 2024 (a 17.3% decrease from 2023), 1.718 million tons in 2025 (-10.5%), 1.555 million tons in 2026 (-9.5%), and 1.432 million tons in 2027 (-7.9%).

Imports are expected to decrease as well, with a forecasted drop to 206,000 tons of oil equivalent in 2024 (-15.4% compared to 2023), 164,000 tons in 2025 (-20.5%), 121,000 tons in 2026 (-26.3%), and 79,000 tons in 2027 (-34.4%).
