Romania brings 150 MW Gura Ialomiței battery storage online in Ialomița County

First phase commissioning adds 150 MW and 300 MWh

Romania has completed the first phase of the Gura Ialomiței battery storage project in Ialomița County, with the facility now commissioned. The plant adds 150 MW of power capacity and 300 MWh of storage. Electrogrup said the site is among the largest operational battery energy storage systems in Romania.

The project was developed by Electrogrup, part of the E-INFRA group. The company confirmed that work on the next development phase will start without delay following commissioning of the first stage.

Construction timeline and grid connection coordination

Construction of the first phase took seven months, despite winter conditions and a tight implementation schedule. Aukera Energy partnered on development of the facility. Connection to Romania’s national transmission network was coordinated with system operator Transelectrica.

This coordination supported integration into Romania’s high-voltage infrastructure as the storage unit entered operation.

Portfolio expansion and next phase preparation

Electrogrup described the commissioning of Gura Ialomiței as another milestone in its energy storage portfolio. With this project, the company said it has delivered more than 1 GWh of installed battery storage capacity across Romania. It also stated that Gura Ialomiței is the sixth completed storage project in its portfolio to date.

The company said preparations for a second phase are already underway, with further expansion expected to increase grid flexibility as Romania integrates more wind and solar generation.

Role in balancing renewables and demand

As Romania expands wind and solar generation capacity, battery storage is expected to support grid stability and balancing of supply and demand. Storage facilities can hold electricity during periods of high production and release it during peak consumption. Electrogrup said projects like Gura Ialomiței improve reliability and help increase efficiency in renewable energy utilization.

The second phase is positioned to become a further element of Romania’s energy transition efforts, supporting long-term modernization of the power sector and strengthening energy security.
