Renewable Output Growth Fails to Stabilize Electricity Prices in Southeast Europe

January 2026 marked a significant increase in renewable energy generation across Southeast Europe, yet electricity prices experienced notable rises in various markets. This paradox highlights the inherent limitations of renewable sources in acting as a consistent price stabilizer within the region’s energy landscape.

Data reveals that renewable energy production surged by 53.05% in Croatia, 43.59% in Greece, 39.81% in Italy, and 37.80% in Serbia. Despite these impressive growth figures, electricity prices escalated, particularly in systems heavily reliant on gas. The analysis indicates that the timing of renewable output did not coincide with peak demand periods, failing to effectively displace gas generation during critical evening hours.

As a consequence, gas-fired generation remained marginally influential in Hungary, Romania, Italy, and Bulgaria. The situation was exacerbated by elevated carbon costs, with EUA prices hovering around €70–75/tCO₂. This resulted in sustained price pressures even amid high levels of renewable energy integration.

In contrast, hydro-rich markets such as Greece and Serbia exhibited different dynamics, temporarily decoupling from the broader trends. This behavior underscores the importance of dispatchable renewables, which can provide more reliable price insulation compared to their intermittent counterparts.

The developments observed in January serve as a critical reminder for market participants: growth in renewable energy capacity does not inherently lead to reduced electricity prices. The absence of adequate storage solutions, hydro resources, or flexible reserves means that gas continues to play a pivotal role in shaping market prices.
