The energy landscape in southern Bosnia and Herzegovina is set for a significant transformation as the proposed Pločno wind farm moves forward with the initiation of environmental screening procedures. This advancement follows the submission of an application by local developer Energy 3, aimed at establishing a facility near Mostar that is expected to contribute nearly 80 MW of renewable energy capacity.
The Pločno wind farm project has its roots dating back to 2017, when Energy 3 was awarded a 30-year concession by the Government of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton. Since then, the project has seen adjustments to its concession framework, with updates formalized through agreements in both 2021 and 2023. These developments reflect a commitment to advancing renewable energy initiatives within the region.
The technical specifications for the wind farm were finalized in March 2024, outlining plans for the installation of 12 Siemens Gamesa turbines, each boasting a capacity of 6.6 MW. Upon completion, the site will have a total installed capacity of 79.2 MW, projected to generate approximately 192 GWh of electricity annually, thereby enhancing the region’s renewable energy output.
Energy 3, which operates under the ownership of Nordic Power Partners, a Danish company specializing in renewable energy projects, is poised to significantly impact the local energy portfolio. The successful navigation through the upcoming environmental review and permitting process will be crucial for realizing this project, which stands to bolster the renewable energy infrastructure in Herzegovina.
