In a significant move towards improving environmental standards, OMV Petrom has finalized a substantial modernization initiative at its Petrobrazi refinery, investing €20 million to enhance its wastewater management systems. This upgrade is expected to bolster operational reliability while addressing critical environmental performance metrics at one of Romania’s pivotal refining facilities.
The focus of this investment has been on revamping treatment installations, which includes enclosing existing wastewater basins and deploying advanced technologies to capture and process gaseous emissions produced during treatment. The extracted gases now undergo a comprehensive purification process that incorporates chemical processing, activated carbon filtration, and final thermal oxidation, significantly enhancing emission control capabilities.
Company officials have indicated that this initiative is part of a larger strategy aimed at ensuring compliance with increasingly stringent environmental regulations and achieving long-term sustainability goals. The modernization reflects an ongoing commitment to adopting technologies that minimize the ecological footprint while optimizing overall plant efficiency.
Over the past two decades, Petrobrazi has seen continuous transformation. Since 2005, OMV Petrom has allocated over €2 billion towards upgrading various installations, enhancing energy performance, and preparing the site for a gradual transition towards low-carbon energy products.
Looking ahead, OMV Petrom is set to embark on an even more ambitious development program estimated at around €750 million. This program will establish a dedicated unit for sustainable aviation fuel and hydrotreated vegetable oil, integrating green hydrogen into the production process. This new facility aims to facilitate the decarbonization of transport fuels and reinforce Romania’s position in the evolving energy landscape.
