Romania-based OMV Petrom has commissioned a new aromatics production unit at its Petrobrazi refinery, following an investment of €140 million. The company inaugurated the installation as part of ongoing work at the site.
Scope and role of the new aromatics installation
The new unit replaces equipment that has been in operation since 1961. It is designed to raise the refinery’s output of aromatic compounds and high-octane fuel components. A key function of the facility is the extraction of benzene from gasoline streams. This process supports the production of fuels that comply with current European fuel standards.
The unit is also intended to increase toluene production, which is used as a petrochemical feedstock for paints, coatings, and adhesives. After commissioning, annual toluene output is expected to rise by around 50,000 tons. The total capacity is expected to reach approximately 100,000 tons per year.
Efficiency and emissions claims
OMV Petrom said the new installation will improve energy efficiency and reduce operational emissions compared with the equipment it replaces. The company added that since acquiring the refinery, it has invested more than €2 billion in modernization projects at Petrobrazi.
Related development project at Petrobrazi
OMV Petrom is also developing another major project at the Petrobrazi site. The investment totals €750 million and includes facilities for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), and green hydrogen production.
