Nuclearelectrica, the operator of Romania’s Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant, has reached a significant construction milestone as part of its long-term modernization initiative for Unit 1. This achievement marks a critical phase in the refurbishment project aimed at extending the operational lifespan of the facility.
The company successfully completed the first continuous concrete pour for permanent structures associated with the refurbishment, a task that required approximately 3,470 cubic meters of concrete, equivalent to about 380 truck deliveries. This operation is noted as the largest concrete pour at the site since the construction of Unit 2.
Work was conducted at the Intermediate Radioactive Waste Storage Facility (DIDR-U5), which is essential for managing and temporarily storing radioactive waste produced during the refurbishment and future operations of both Unit 1 and Unit 2. The completion of this facility is crucial for ensuring compliance with safety and environmental standards during the modernization process.
CEO Cosmin Ghiță emphasized that this milestone signifies the beginning of a large-scale modernization phase for Unit 1, which is projected to extend its operational life by an additional 30 years. The reactor is anticipated to return to service in 2030, contributing significantly to Romania’s energy landscape.
In September 2025, Nuclearelectrica secured the necessary construction authorization from Romania’s nuclear regulator, facilitating timely progress on civil engineering works related to the refurbishment program. The modernization initiative is structured into three main phases, with current efforts focused on preparation and infrastructure works expected to continue until late 2027. The final phase will involve shutting down Unit 1 for comprehensive refurbishment.
Upon completion of these upgrades, Unit 1 is set to reconnect to Romania’s national electricity grid in 2030, allowing it to operate for an additional three decades. Since its commissioning in 1996, Unit 1 has been integral to Romania’s electricity supply, generating over 149 million MWh while preventing approximately 145 million tons of CO₂ emissions.
The reactor has maintained a capacity factor exceeding 90%, positioning it among the most efficient nuclear units worldwide. This strong performance underscores Nuclearelectrica’s commitment to enhancing energy production capabilities while adhering to environmental sustainability goals.
