A 169 MW photovoltaic project in Iepurești, Giurgiu County, has reached final stages ahead of full commercial operation in Romania. Developed by Nofar Energy, the facility is currently the largest operational solar power plant in the country. The completion of the project marks a new milestone for Romania’s utility-scale solar sector.
Technical steps before commercial electricity sales
Commercial electricity sales depend on completing technical verification procedures for the plant. The process includes certification tests carried out by the network operator. After those tests, a connection certificate is issued, followed by an operating license from the national energy regulator. Only after completing these steps will the installation fully transition into commercial operation.
Portfolio scale, storage plans and financial outlook
The Iepurești project is described as a major asset within Nofar Energy’s expanding Romanian portfolio. The company’s portfolio includes approximately 850 MW of solar capacity and 2.3 GWh of planned energy storage. Nofar Energy estimates revenue of around EUR 19 million during the first year of operation, with projected EBITDA of approximately EUR 16 million.
Battery integration and planned capacity expansion
Nofar Energy has confirmed ongoing work to integrate a large battery energy storage system at the site. The company expects the battery addition to enhance renewable energy utilization, improve grid flexibility, and increase overall efficiency of the installation. In the longer term, it plans to expand the plant’s capacity from 169 MW to 400 MW.
