In a critical move for its ongoing operations, the Serbian oil and gas company NIS has formally requested an extension from the US Treasury Department for a special permit. This request comes as the current authorization is set to expire on 20 February, posing potential risks to the company’s ability to conduct business effectively.
NIS has highlighted its strategic importance to Serbia’s economy in its filing, emphasizing that its uninterrupted operations are essential for maintaining national energy supply, safeguarding jobs, and ensuring public revenue streams. The company is currently engaged in discussions regarding a potential change in its ownership structure, indicating that additional time is necessary for stakeholders to finalize any agreements.
The urgency of this request is underscored by the previous issuance of a temporary license by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), which permits shareholders and related parties to negotiate ownership adjustments until 24 March 2026. This license was established to facilitate a regulated transition process within the company. By seeking an extension of its operating clearance, NIS aims to ensure business continuity while these negotiations unfold.
