The energy landscape in Serbia is undergoing significant transformation as the state-owned utility, EPS, has installed a new self-propelled conveyor system at the Drmno open-pit mine located in Kostolac. This development comes with an investment of 10.6 million euros and is aimed at modernizing the mining sector to meet increasing energy demands. The conveyor system is expected to commence operations in April, further enhancing the mine’s operational capabilities.
In a noteworthy achievement, the Drmno mine surpassed a production milestone in 2025, reaching over 10 million tons of coal output, marking its highest production level to date. EPS management has underscored the importance of continuous upgrades to heavy machinery as essential for sustaining production levels and bolstering long-term energy security within the region.
Moreover, EPS reported that its mining operations across Kolubara and Kostolac produced 7% more coal in 2025 compared to the previous year. The integration of modern machinery not only streamlines operational efficiency but also ensures a stable and reliable coal supply for Serbia’s energy needs. This strategic enhancement reflects EPS’s commitment to maintaining a robust energy supply amid evolving market conditions.
