Natural gas imports in Romania are projected to surge significantly in 2025, reflecting a complex interplay between domestic production stability and evolving market dynamics. Data from the National Institute for Statistics indicates that imports will reach approximately 3.2 million tons of oil equivalent, marking a substantial increase of 75% or 1.368 million tons compared to the previous year. This surge highlights the country’s growing reliance on external sources to meet energy demands while domestic production remains relatively stable.

In 2025, Romania’s domestic natural gas output is estimated at 7.503 million tons of oil equivalent, slightly down by 0.9% from the previous year. Despite this minor decline, forecasts from the National Strategy and Forecasting Commission suggest a gradual increase in production capacity over the next few years. By 2027, natural gas production is expected to rise at an average annual rate of 1.7%, reaching approximately 8.176 million tons of oil equivalent, driven by new capacities and improved operational efficiencies.

However, the outlook for imports indicates a potential downturn post-2025. The CNSP anticipates a decrease in import volumes, projecting figures of 2.15 million tons of oil equivalent in 2026 and further down to 2.022 million tons in 2027, reflecting a decrease of 2.7% and 6%, respectively. This anticipated decline aligns with expectations of increased domestic production and enhanced transit capabilities to foreign markets.

Overall, while Romania’s energy landscape in 2025 is characterized by a significant spike in natural gas imports, strategic planning and gradual production growth are expected to foster a more balanced natural gas market in the coming years. The interplay between imports and domestic output will be crucial for policymakers and industry stakeholders as they navigate the evolving energy landscape in Southeast Europe.
